Trademark application is made under 45 different classes as per the NICE classification of Goods and Services. Each trademark class represents a distinct set of goods and services. There are 34 classes of goods and 11 classes of services.  Classes 1 to 34 deal with the specification of goods whereas Classes 35 to 44 deal with the specification of services.

What is NICE Classification?

The Nice classification is a system of goods and services administered by WIPO to register trademarks. It was established in 1957 via the multilateral treaty “The Nice Agreement Concerning the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks”.

It consists of 45 Class Headings, 34 for Goods and 11 for Services, the Alphabetical List of Goods and Services and the Explanatory notes for each class. There are 84 States party to the Nice Agreement with the trademark offices of 65 additional States also using the classification as well as WIPO, OAPI, ARIPO, BOIP and EUIPO
